Celebrating UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Belgium. The second series shows the a Beguinage, a collection of small buildings used by Beguines. Unmarried women or widows, the "Beguines", dedicated their lives to God without retiring from the world. The Flemish beguinages are collections of Flemish styled buildings composed of houses, churches, ancillary buildings and green spaces. Today in Belgium there remain some 26 beguinages, partially or totally restored, and in 1998, UNESCO deemed 13 of them world heritage site.
