World AIDS Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Tuberculosis Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Malaria Day and World Hepatitis Day. It is celebrated on 1 December every year and it is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection.
The red ribbon, symbol of the fight against AIDS, is depicted at the center of the coin. The design is an initiative of the "Visual Aids Artist Caucus" and the American painter Franck Moore. The red tie is depicted close to the heart as a symbol of solidarity with the sick and it is shaped like an inverted "V", representing victory against the disease. |
