Greece held the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2014, before handing over reins to Italy on 1 July 2014. It is the fifth time that Greece held the Presidency since its accession to the European Communities in 1981.
The Presidency is responsible for the functioning of the Council of the European Union, the upper house of the EU legislature. It rotates among the member states of the EU every six months. The presidency is not an individual, but rather the position is held by a national government.
The coin features the Greek Presidency logo, which serves as a visual symbol for the Presidency. The logo of the Greek Presidency depicts a sailboat in full sail, formed by the initials of the European Union. It aspires to unite common European values and Greece’s unique identity. The symbolic background of the logo is the sea: a fundamental element of Greek identity, but also a fundamental component of Europe’s past and future. |
