Obverse of Netherlands 2 euros 2013 - Change of Throne Announcement
Krause - Mishler KM# 332
Details Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, the oldest reigning Dutch monarch, announced her abdication three days before her 75th birthday. After 33 years on the throne following her mother's abdication in 1980, Beatrix said she would relinquish the crown at the end of April 2013, leaving the monarchy to Crown-Prince Willem-Alexander, the oldest of her three sons.

The announcement, in a nationally televised speech, signaled an end to the reign of one of Europe's longest-serving monarchs, whose time on the throne was marked by tumultuous shifts in Dutch society and, more recently, by personal tragedy.

The coin depicts the heads of both the departing and the new monarch.
