Obverse of Portugal 2 euros 2017 - 150 Years of the Police and Public Security
Details Portugal celebrates the 150th anniversarry of the establishment of "Polícia de Segurança Pública" (PSP). The Public Security Police (PSP) is a Portuguese security force charged with defending democratic legality, guaranteeing internal security and defending citizens' rights. In spite of having many other functions, the PSP is known to be the responsible security force of the great urban areas of Portugal, since the surveillance of the rural areas is normally reserved for the National Republican Guard. Because of its high visibility in the eyes of the public, PSP has become the Police par excellence of Portugal.

The design of the coin shows human figures and buildings, symbolic representations of citizens and cities, where citizen security is generally guaranteed, and the simplified badge of the police forces. Legends include the year "1867" and the year of coinage, "2017", the issuing country, 'PORTUGAL', the reason for the commemoration, "PUBLIC SECURITY" (Public Security) and the three main themes related to citizenship, "RIGHTS", "FREEDOMS" and "GUARANTEES" (Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees)
