Obverse of Spain 2 euros 2018 - Felipe VI of Spain
Details The coin marks the 50 years since the birth of Felipe VI of Spain. Felipe VI was born on 30 January 1968 and is the King of Spain. He ascended to the throne on 19 June 2014 upon the abdication of his father, King Juan Carlos I. He is the only son of Juan Carlos and his wife Sofía of Greece and Denmark. When Juan Carlos was chosen in 1969 to be Francisco Franco's successor, Felipe became second in line to the Spanish throne.

The design reproduces the coat of arms of King Felipe VI. On the left, in a semicircle, the words "ESPAÑA", and under the year of issue "2018"; in the lower right-hand corner, in a semicircle, the inscription "50 ANIVERSARIO DE SM FELIPE VI"; at the top right the tick, the "M" crowned. On the outer edge 12-point five-star hotels representing the European Union.

Due to the low mintage, hundreds of people formed queues in front of the banks on the day of the release, sven before they opened their doors. In many cases the coins were exhausted in just a few hours, even although the amount of coins was restricted for each person.
