The coin is dedicated to the French policy maker Simone Veil, icon of the struggle for women's rights.
The 89 years old Simone Veil survived the deportation to Auschwitz and was one of the main protagonists of the construction of Europe. She became a symbol of the decriminalization of abortion which occured in 1979, when Veil was minister of health.
The main theme of the design is a portrait of Simone Veil, accompanied by the initials "RF" (Republique Francaise) to the left, and at the top in a semicircle the inscription "SIMONE VEIL" "1927-2017". In the background the European Parliament, with the date "1975", the year in which the abortion in France was decriminalized. Under the portrait the number "78659", which is her serial number when she was a prisoner in the concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
