The official 2014 blister of the Hellenic Republic is dedicated to “Thrace”, a north-east region of the country. It includes all 8 euro coins (1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents and 1, 2 euros).
Modern-day Thrace consists of the southeastern regions of Bulgaria, northwestern Greece, and the parts of Turkey that separate the Black Sea from the Sea of Marmara. But the antiquity of Thrace dates back to ancient Greek legends and the geographical boundaries of the Kingdom of Thrace were the Bosphorus Strait, the Balkan Mountains, and the Rhodope Mountains.
Greek mythology suggests that Thrax, the son of Ares (Greek god of war), made Thrace his home. Thracians, thus, were believed to be the descendents of the mighty Thrax. |
