The coin is dedicated to the 100 years since the visions of Fátima.
The Three Secrets of Fátima consist of a series of apocalyptic visions and prophecies which were given to three young Portuguese shepherds, Lúcia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, by a Marian apparition, starting on May 13, 1917. The three children were visited by the Virgin Mary six times between May and October 1917. The apparition is now popularly known as Our Lady of Fátima.
The obverse of the coin shows the three little shepherds of Fatima: Lucía dos Santos, and their cousins Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto, based on a photograph that appeared on page 356 of the weekly Ilustração Portuguesa on October 29, 1917, located in front of the Marian shrine of Fatima. Above the motif, in an arched line adjusted to the outer edge of the coin, the legend of the issuing country "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO", and horizontally "FATIMA", the anniversary years "1917" and "2017", as well as the Italian mintmark in Rome "R". |
