Explanation: Official name: Ukraine. (Part of the former Soviet Union) Monetary unit: 1 ruble = 100 kopecks. On November 12, 1992, the karbovanets or the Ukrainian coupon replaced the Russian ruble as the temporary national currency; a prospective permanent national currency, the hryvnia, had not been issued as of October 1995. Monetary unit: Karbovanets (no minor units). On September 2, 1996 the karbovanets, a transitional currency, was replaced by the hryvnia at a 100,000 to 1 ratio. Both currencies circulated in parallel until September 16, 1996 when the hryvnia became the sole official currency. Current Monetary unit: hryvnia (plural hryvny) (no decimal unit)
